About Dr. Anna Katogiritis - Relief Veterinarian and Animal Rights Activist

With over 20 years working, volunteering, and studying in the veterinary world, Anna combines compassionate veterinary services with passionate advocacy to improve the lives of wild and domestic animals worldwide.

Anna’s Background

Dr. Anna Katogiritis, of Karpathos Greece, has been involved in animal welfare campaigns for over 15 years. As an animal rights and animal welfare advocate, Anna has volunteered numerous times around the globe in countries such as Greece, Sierra Leone, Congo, and Indonesia, where she has assisted organizations with the rehabilitation and medical care of wildlife and domestic animals.

Anna holds a degree in molecular biology from the University of Crete in Greece and a degree in veterinary medicine from the Virginia Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine (USA). Following her graduation, she completed an intensive one year rotating/emergency/surgery internship after a successful application through the MATCH. While in veterinary school, she founded Dr. Jane Goodall’s official office in Greece. The office was registered as a non for profit, which she directed pro bono for 5 years,  under the name: Jane Goodall’s R&S Greece. During her time as the director of Jane Goodall’s R&S Greece, Anna was the lead organizer for Dr. Goodall’s tours in Greece in 2016 and 2018. Dr. Katogiritis has partnered with prominent organizations such as the British Council Greece, National Geographic Greece, Science & Communication, American Community Schools of Athens, Thessaloniki Film Festival, the Natural History Museum of Crete-University of Crete and others.

In 2020 Anna led the development of Animal Welfare Karpathos, a new non for profit organization on Karpathos island (Greece). The organization received support by Jane Goodall (PhD, DBE, UN Messenger of Peace), as well as the President of Democracy (Greece), Katerina Sakellaropoulou. As the founder and executive board member of this newly founded organization, Anna aims to reduce the over 1000 stray cat population on the island by organizing spay/neuter and wellness campaigns, promoting adoptions, and educating the public. She has been the recipient of multiple awards, including the “30 under 30, Young Philanthropists” from the Greek America Foundation( 2017), the “Bob Rosenthal Senior Oncology Award” ( 2018) and the “40 under 40” award by the Greek America Foundation in 2021.

Anna currently provides services as a relief emergency veterinarian throughout the United States. Her new home base for part of the year is Thailand, where she hopes to become involved with more conservation efforts throughout SE Asia
